1. turn sth down

meaning – to reduce the noise, heat, light, etc. made by a piece of equipment by moving its controls – zmniejszyć poziom dźwięku, ciepła, światła wytwarzanego przez jakieś medium (przyciszyć coś, np. radio, Tv; przykręcić (gaz, ogrzewanie, światło))

I can’t stand the noise any longer! Turn the volume down!

Nie zniosę tego hałasu dłużej! Przycisz to!

It’s hot and stuffy in here. Would you mind if I opened the window and turned the heat down?

Tu jest goraco i duszno. Masz coś przeciwko temu abym otworzył okno i zmniejszył grzanie?

2. put sth down

meaning –

a) to place something that you are holding on a table, shelf, floor or another surface – położyć coś, kłaść coś, np. na stole, półce, podlodze, etc…

Why are you still holding the watering can in your hand? Put it down on the floor.

Dlaczego wciąż trzymasz tę konewkę w ręku? Odstaw ją na podłogę.

A: Have you seen my sunglasses anywhere? I’ve been looking for them since the morning.
B: Yes. They’re in the kitchen. You must have put them down on the table while you’re having your breakfast.

A: Widziałeś gdzieś moje okulary przeciwsłoneczne? Szukam  ich od rana.
B: Tak. Są w kuchni. Musiałaś je położyc na stole kiedy jadlaś śniadanie.

b) to write something, to make a note of something – zapisać coś, zporządzić notatkę

A: Did you know that Kate’s birthday is on Thursday?
B: Yes, I put it down in my diary a few weeks ago.

A: Wiedziałeś, że Urodziny Kasi są w czwartek?
B: Tak, zapisałam to w swoim terminarzu kilka tygodni temu.
